Pansexual Author, Genderqueer Character by Lynn Kelling (#giveaway #pansexual #genderqueer)

As a pansexual human, it has been rare for me to see a depiction of the particular way I’m attracted to others in books, TV, movies, magazines… you name it. This bothers me more the older I get. We need more characters who are vocal about their attraction to all genders and the happily inclusive message it sends that, ‘yes, all of these are hot.’

While we’re discussing my personal sexual preferences, let me add that I’m intensely drawn to people who skirt gender boundaries or who obliterate them altogether. It’s where the inspiration for the main character in my new novel, Becoming Kerry, came from. When I started out writing Kerry’s character, it was for admittedly selfish reasons.

Kerry is the type of person I’m attracted to—vulnerable yet strong, creative yet humble, brave yet realistic, loyal to a fault, sexy as hell, health conscious, wise and willing to question everything told to him/her until certain it’s the absolute truth. I love the ways Kerry’s gender identity isn’t able to be contained in the binary “male” and “female” categories. I wrote Kerry to be the type of person I’ve been impatient to discover in my favorite art forms.

Going into writing this novel, I knew some readers might hesitate to explore an erotic romance with the pairing of an alpha, bisexual man and a sensitive, quiet, genderqueer character. I sought to capture what I found arousing about the pairing’s sexual possibilities in a way that might lure others in.

At the beginning of the book, Kerry wants to be taken over. To confront his submissiveness and find a safe place to be sexually consumed by a man with a ravenous appetite for natural beauty and a more subversive sort of cockiness. Kerry is a sensitive soul nursing a broken heart and has survived more hardships than most. Because of rebelliousness, financial need, and a desperately repressed sexuality, Kerry is a dancer at strip clubs for both men and women. He’s used to being next-to-naked in public, gyrating to sultry, thumping beats with the skill of a seasoned pro. Kerry’s wardrobe contains a Marine’s dress blues, kilts with chunky black boots, self-designed, hand-tailored dresses that skim the body, and outfits that consist only of a thong and heels. Kerry doesn’t want to doubt his partner’s lust or ability to be caring and observant of things he might be too shy to ask outright.

Kerry’s counterpart, Ewyn, is a top. A Dom. He’s a big, badass, Irish bloke. He knows what he wants. He craves control. He likes to set some rules, sharing absolute trust and complete respect. He confidently breaks down walls built of fear in order to get deep inside where no one else has been.

It goes beyond male and female, or male and male, for both Kerry and Ewyn.

This isn’t just a story about sex, gender, and orientation. It’s about the struggle to break free of unfair imposed expectations, cruelty, and the most painful types of loss. It’s about learning how to accept what life dishes out with a grateful heart and a willingness to grow, greeting each new day with a smile and love waiting to be shared. It’s about what it means to grow up in a world that isn’t always kind; to be made stronger than anyone thought possible through the bravery of self-acceptance in a judgmental, fear-inflicted society.

Kerry is my celebration of the beauty I see in people, and my dream for a future where the only thing anyone is pressured to be is the best, truest, kindest version of themselves. It’s what I crave, for all of us.

Kerry Sanderson is an exotic dancer, former military brat, and aspiring fashion designer, but believes he’s much more than any of those labels imply. As his relationship with transgender boyfriend Jamie falls apart, it’s Kerry’s gender identity and sexual preferences that become the real issue between them. Left questioning whether he’s been living under everyone else's terms, and none of his own, Kerry sets out to discover who he really is. Desperate to escape his dangerous neighborhood and redefine his life, Kerry vows to start making some changes. One of the first is accepting what seems to be an innocent offer from allegedly straight security guard, Ewyn Garrity, after a long shift dancing at gay club Blaze. Safety isn't the only thing Ewyn tempts Kerry with as sparks fly and lines are crossed. The more acceptance Kerry finds in Ewyn, the more he’s tempted to let go of the fear and self-doubt that had been hampering his ability to be himself. But the more honest Kerry is, slowly accepting the feminine aspects of his identity and becoming vulnerable, the more deadly threats he faces when blind intolerance threatens before he's barely bloomed.
